AWG Mid-Career Excellence Award Nomination Information
The AWG Mid-Career Excellence Award is given annually in recognition of significant contributions to Earth and space sciences by an outstanding mid-career woman scientist. Recognizing that evaluation is somewhat different for different career paths, we invite nominations in one of three categories: academic, industry, and government. Up to three awards, one in each category, may be given each year.
We define mid-career as the professional stage demonstrating earned experience and expertise but with the expectation of many years remaining to gain more experience, advance qualifications and pursue leadership roles. This approximates to 7 to 20 years of professional experience. Each nominee will be evaluated based on their impact and breadth of scientific contribution and their outstanding community service.
Nominations will be solicited from the AWG membership at large. The impact and breadth of scientific contribution and community service will be evaluated as follows.
Examples of the candidate’s impact and breadth of scientific contribution may include, but are not limited to:
- Candidate’s body of work demonstrates new ideas for data acquisition, analytical methods, and/or scientific approaches or syntheses.
- Overall scientific impact of a candidate’s work to her specific field of endeavor (Academia, Government, or Industry).
- In recognition of the non-disclosure limitation that candidates from Industry and Government may face, the overall scientific impact of a candidate’s work can be exhibited in the nominee’s general project categories.
Examples of outstanding community service include, but are not limited to:
- Application of candidate’s expertise through participation and service to organizations, museums, and/or science centers
- Exceptional service relevant to professional activities
- Exceptional mentoring with students and/or colleagues
- Significant contributions in informal roles “behind the scenes” and/or in formal roles
- Significant contributions to community outreach (for example, providing materials for K-12 students and/or teachers) and communication for general audiences.
